Shihan Shimamoto Katsuyuki and me
“Once, nearly a quarter of a century ago, pondering what new and interesting things I could do, out of a lack of better ideas, I became interested in Japanese culture. I joined an Aikido club, delved into books, and scoured the internet for information on the topic. Initially, it revolved around “bushido” and Japanese martial arts, but it quickly transformed into a fascination with the history, tradition, aesthetics, and applied arts of ancient Japan. Being someone who enjoys experimenting with information, I embarked on sensory learning related to sword mounting and later explored Japanese lacquer techniques. The pinnacle of this journey was delving into the knowledge and skills required to create inro. Simultaneously, I read extensively about the aesthetics of old Japan, which wouldn’t have been possible without immersing myself in the traditions and history of this extraordinary country. On the pages of this somewhat unconventional corner of the internet, you’ll find what I’d like to share with readers through various articles. Feel free to explore these nooks and crannies. The topic is as vast as the ocean, so you’ll discover something new from time to time. Good luck.”
